What is DPI, really?
Dots per inch is not a property of a file — it is the result of dividing the pixels you have by the inches you want. The same 3000 px image is 300 DPI at 10 inches and 100 DPI at 30 inches. That is why this tool asks for a printed size.
Why 300 DPI?
300 is what commercial presses and photo labs ask for, because it is roughly the limit of what the eye resolves at reading distance. Work viewed further away needs less: 150 DPI is fine for canvas and posters, and 100 DPI is normal for banners and murals.
My file says 72 DPI. Is it ruined?
No. The DPI tag stored in a file is metadata and changing it adds no detail. What matters is the pixel count, which this tool works from.
How does this relate to seamless repeats?
If you tile a motif across a wall or fabric roll, print DPI still decides how sharp each repeat looks at the finished size. Check the motif first, then generate the seamless tile.
